Perinatal Mental Health

In Australia, 1 in 10 women experience depression during pregnancy and 1 in 7 experience depression in the 12 months following the birth of their baby. The rates of anxiety are thought to be at least as common as depression during this time. It is also common for women to experience anxiety and depression at the same time during this period. If you or someone you care about might be affected seeking help is really important.

Symptoms of depression can include feeling depressed, not enjoying the things you used to, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, sleep problems, tiredness, and changes in appetite.

Increased social isolation, conflict with family and friends, difficulties bonding with your baby, struggling with daily activities and demands may indicate you, or your partner, need professional support.

Sarah can support by helping you to understand your what is happening for you and provide you with things you can do that will help such as doing things you enjoy, increasing social contact, challenging and changing your negative thoughts and feelings, helping you to feel better about yourself.

Symptoms of anxiety commonly include a feeling of stress or worry. Other symptoms can include problems concentrating, feeling restless, avoiding things that increase anxiety, rapid heartbeat, trembling or shaking, feeling lightheaded, numbness, sweating, or upset stomach.

Sarah can help you manage your anxiety through breathing, relaxation, challenging your thinking, improving your sleep and supporting you to learn how to solve problems.
